Meet PiperWai: our February 2018 featured Woman-owned Company

Posted by Tamara Brenes on

We've had the great fortune of meeting Jess, Lindsay and part of the PiperWai team and, wow, they are all amazing! So we wanted to share a bit about their story and why we love their company and their products.

PiperWai Founders

Named after Jess' beloved dog and a South American tribe, PiperWai LLC was started by childhood friends Jess Edelstein and Sarah Ribner in March 2014. From production in a community kitchen to funding from ABC Shark Tank's Barbara Corcoran, PiperWai continues to grow and redefine the natural deodorant landscape.

Since their 2015 appearance on ABC’s Shark Tank, PiperWai has continued to grow quickly. "Customers message us every day to tell us that this product has either changed their lives or works better than anything else they’ve tried. It's remarkable to experience PiperWai's growth from a product I used to handcraft in a community kitchen with my childhood friend, into an internationally recognized brand," says Ribner.

PiperWai is the first naturally powerful, aluminum-free deodorant that uses activated charcoal to absorb wetness and fight odor. Natural ingredients like organic coconut oil, shea butter, and pure vitamin E soothe even the most sensitive skin. Their stain-free formula rubs in clear and won’t discolor your clothes.

The product has gotten rave reviews, including from us. We've been using it for a few months now and love it, specially its gender-neutral scent.

What’s in a name?

Posted by Tamara Brenes on

What's in a name? We asked ourselves this question and realized that it isn’t the name itself but the meaning behind the name that matters. We wanted to choose a name for Bly & Bell that evoked inspiration and action, a sense of wonder and adventure. We married our love for travel, the outdoors and urban escapes and drew inspiration from two gumptious women who challenged the standards of their time: Nellie Bly and Gertrude Bell.

So who are these incredible, almost mythical, women?

Nellie Bly: Elizabeth Cochran Seaman, known by her pen name Nellie Bly, was a pioneering journalist, writer, industrialist, inventor, and charity worker who was widely known for her record-breaking trip around the world in 72 days, in emulation of Jules Verne's fictional character Phileas Fogg, and an exposé in which she faked insanity to study a mental institution from within. She was a pioneer in her field who launched a new kind of investigative journalism.

Gertrude Bell: Explorer and one of Oxford University's most brilliant students, was also the greatest woman mountaineer of her age - a diplomat, archaeologist, and activist. She is honored and well renowned for helping to delineate the borders of Iraq after World War I. Focus-minded and driven by a precise cause, she applied her energy, intellect, and funds to tackle problems of global magnitude. Gertrude's legacy and never-bending will evokes strong parallels to the present, from world powers vying to determine the fate of the Middle East to women's struggles to be taken seriously by male colleagues. Nicole Kidman played her in the biopic "Queen of the Desert."

With our name, BLY & BELL, serving as a constant reminder of these adventurous high-achieving women, we will bring you the best possible experience and hope to provide inspiration through our journal, our curated products, our mission-driven projects and our community.

Before you go, think about who inspires you? What names resonate with you? What do you want to accomplish today?
